॥ संकटमोचन हनुमानाष्टक ॥
Saṅkaṭamocana Hanumānāṣṭak
Sankatmochan Hanuman ashtak is an eight verse hymn praising Sri Hanuman, written by Goswami Tulsidas. ‘Sankatmochan’ means the one who liberates from crisis. Throughout the hymn, some of the various critical moments from Lord Hanuman’s life are recalled when He, with His wit and power, overcame such obstacles none other could manage, and He is urged to similarly take away the troubles of His devotee. Hanuman ashtak should be read after chanting the Hanuman Chalisa. As one of the more potentially powerful hymns, it should not be played with. Unless duly advised by a guru or seer or similarly spiritually ordained person, the Hanuman ashtak should be chanted specifically on Tuesday and Saturday.
बाल समय रवि भक्षि लियो तब, तीनहुँ लोक भयो अंधियारो। ताहि सों त्रास भयो जग को, यह संकट काहु सों जात न टारो। देवन आनि करी बिनती तब, छाँड़ि दियो रवि कष्ट निवारो। को नहिं जानत है जग में कपि, संकटमोचन नाम तिहारो ॥ १ ॥
Bāla samaya ravi bhakśi liyo taba, tīnahum̐ loka bhayo andhiyāro। tāhi son trāsa bhayo jaga ko, yaha saṅkaṭa kāhu son jāta na ṭāro। devana āni karī binatī taba, chām̐ṛi diyo ravi kaṣṭa nivāro। ko nahin jānat hai jaga men kapi, Saṅkaṭamocana nāma tihāro ॥ 1 ॥
As a kid (when) you devoured the sun, the three worlds were engulfed in darkness This caused a fright in the world, nobody could resolve this crisis (when) the gods came and requested then, you released the sun and removed the anguish. Who in the world doesn’t know simian, Sankatmochan (liberator from crisis) is your name.
बालि की त्रास कपीस बसै गिरि, जात महाप्रभु पंथ निहारो। चौंकि महामुनि साप दियो तब, चाहिए कौन बिचार बिचारो। कै द्विज रूप लिवाय महाप्रभु, सो तुम दास के सोक निवारो को नहिं जानत है जग में कपि, संकटमोचन नाम तिहारो ॥ २ ॥
Bāli kī trāsa kapīsa basai giri, jāta Mahāprabhu pantha nihāro। Chaunki mahāmuni sāpa diyo taba, cāhiye kauna bicāra bicāro। Kai dvija rūpa livāya Mahāprabhu, so tuma dāsa ke soka nivāro। ko nahin jānat hai jaga men kapi, Saṅkaṭamocana nāma tihāro॥ 2 ॥
Due to Bali’s fright the Simian king (Sugriva) resided on mountain, (there) You eagerly waited for SriRam The startled sage cursed You, someone was needed to remind You (Your powers) Disguised as twice-born great Lord You brought SriRam, such You- remove the sorrows of Your servant Who in the world doesn’t know simian, Sankatmochan (liberator from crisis) is your name.
अंगद के संग लेन गए सिय, खोज कपीस यह बैन उचारो। जीवत ना बचिहौ हम सों जु, बिना सुधि लाये इहाँ पगु धारो। हेरि थके तट सिन्धु सबै तब, लाए सिया सुधि प्रान उबारो को नहिं जानत है जग में कपि, संकटमोचन नाम तिहारो ॥ ३ ॥
Aṅgada ke saṅga lena gaye Siya, khoja kapīsa yaha baina ucāro। jīvata nā bacihau ham son ju, binā sudhi lāye ihām̐ pagu dhāro। heri thake taṭa sindhu sabai taba, lāye Siyā sudhi prāna ubāro। ko nahin jānat hai jaga men kapi, Saṅkaṭamocana nāma tihāro॥ 3 ॥
(When) You went with Angad to find Sita, Sugriva said thus- I wouldn’t leave anyone alive if, you all return without tracing Sita. When everyone was dejected upon reaching the sea-shore, You brought Sita’s news and rescued their lives Who in the world doesn’t know simian, Sankatmochan (liberator from crisis) is your name.
रावण त्रास दई सिय को सब, राक्षसि सों कही सोक निवारो। ताहि समय हनुमान महाप्रभु, जाए महारजनीचर मारो। चाहत सीय असोक सों आगि सु, दै प्रभुमुद्रिका सोक निवारो को नहिं जानत है जग में कपि, संकटमोचन नाम तिहारो ॥ ४ ॥
Rāvanͅa trāsa da-ī Siya ko saba, rākśasi son kahī soka nivāro। tāhi samay Hanumāna Mahāprabhu, jāye mahārajanīcara māro। cāhata Sīya asoka son āgi su, dai prahbumudrikā soka nivāro। ko nahin jānat hai jaga men kapi, Saṅkaṭamocana nāma tihāro ॥ 4 ॥
Through his demonesses Ravana troubled Sita, You removed Her sorrow Then the great god Hanuman, slayed AkshayKumar Sita wanted fire from Ashoka tree, you gave Her Ram’s ring and removed her sorrow Who in the world doesn’t know simian, Sankatmochan (liberator from crisis) is your name.
बान लग्यो उर लछिमन के तब, प्राण तजे सुत रावन मारो। लै गृह बैद्य सुषेन समेत, तबै गिरि द्रोण सु बीर उपारो। आनि सजीवन हाथ दई तब, लछिमन के तुम प्रान उबारो को नहिं जानत है जग में कपि, संकटमोचन नाम तिहारो ॥ ५ ॥
bāna lagyo ura Lachimana ke taba, prānͅa taje suta rāvana māro। Lai grͅha baidya suṣena sameta, tabai giri dronͅ su bīra upāro। āni sajīvana hātha da-ī taba, Lachimana ke tuma prāna ubāro। ko nahin jānat hai jaga men kapi, Saṅkaṭamocana nāma tihāro॥ 5 ॥
Lakshman was hit in the chest with an arrow, rendered near-dead by Meghnad’s arrow You brought doctor Sushena along with his house, O brave one You uprooted Mount Drona You brought Sanjivani (a medicine), and saved Lakshman’s life Who in the world doesn’t know simian, Sankatmochan (liberator from crisis) is your name.
रावन जुद्ध अजान कियो तब, नाग कि फाँस सबै सिर डारो। श्रीरघुनाथ समेत सबै दल, मोह भयो यह संकट भारो I आनि खगेस तबै हनुमान जु, बंधन काटि सुत्रास निवारो को नहिं जानत है जग में कपि, संकटमोचन नाम तिहारो ॥ ६ ॥
Rāvana juddha ajāna kiyo taba, nāga ki phām̐sa sabai sira dāro। ŚrīRaghunātha sameta sabai dala, moha bhayo yaha saṅkaṭa bhāro। āni khagesa tabai Hanumāna ju, bandhana kāṭi sutrāsa nivāro। ko nahin jānat hai jaga men kapi, Saṅkaṭamocana nāma tihāro ॥ 6 ॥
When Ravana fought mightily, and struck everyone with Nag-pash (snake cord) Everyone along with SriRam, was engulfed in the crisis of illusion Hnauman brought Garuda who, cut their (snake) cords and freed from the great trouble Who in the world doesn’t know simian, Sankatmochan (liberator from crisis) is your name.
बंधु समेत जबै अहिरावन, लै रघुनाथ पताल सिधारो। देबिहि पूजि भलि विधि सों बलि, देउ सबै मिलि मन्त्र विचारो। जाये सहाए भयो तब ही, अहिरावन सैन्य समेत संहारो को नहिं जानत है जग में कपि, संकटमोचन नाम तिहारो ॥ ७ ॥
bandhu sameta jabai ahirāvana, lai Raghunātha patāla sidhāro। Debihi pūji bhali vidhi son bali, deu sabai mili mantra vicāro। jāye sahāye bhayo taba hī Ahirāvana sainya sameta samhāro। ko nahin jānat hai jaga men kapi, Saṅkaṭamocana nāma tihāro ॥ 7 ॥
When Ahiravan took SriRam, along with Lakshman to netherworld Worshipped the goddess to sacrifice (Ram-Lakshman), chanting mantras You reached there then, and slayed Ahiravan with his army Who in the world doesn’t know simian, Sankatmochan (liberator from crisis) is your name.
काज किये बड़ देवन के तुम, बीर महाप्रभु देखि बिचारो। कौन सो संकट मोर गरीब को, जो तुमसों नहिं जात है टारो। बेगि हरो हनुमान महाप्रभु, जो कछु संकट होए हमारो को नहिं जानत है जग में कपि, संकटमोचन नाम तिहारो ॥ ८ ॥
kāja kiye baṛa devana ke tuma, bīra Mahāprabhu dekhi bicāro। Kaun so saṅkaṭa mora garība ko, jo tumason nahin jāta hai ṭāro। Begi haro Hanumāna Mahāprabhu, jo kachu saṅkaṭa hoye hamāro। ko nahin jānat hai jaga men kapi, Saṅkaṭamocana nāma tihāro॥ 8 ॥
You’ve accomplished great tasks of gods, brave Lord think about it – What crisis of a poor person like me, can You not resolve Lord Hanuman quickly remove, whatever my trouble is Who in the world doesn’t know simian, Sankatmochan (liberator from crisis) is your name.

लाल देह लाली लसे, अरु धरि लाल लंगूर। बज्र देह दानव दलन, जय जय जय कपि सूर ॥
Lāla deha lālī lase, aru dhari lāla laṅgūra। Bajra deha dānava dalana, jaya jaya jaya kapi sūra ।।
Red-bodied, adorned with red vermillion, assuming the form of red langur Diamond-hard body, slaying demons, Hail Hail Hail the brave simian
