Hanumān Cālīsā
हनुमान चालीसा
Son of Mata Anjani and Kesari, and born as blessing of Pavan Dev (Lord of winds), Hanuman ji is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. He plays a pivotal role in the Ramayana, and is best known as the unmatched bhakta (devotee) of Sri Ram. He is known by different names – Anjaneya (son of Anjani), Maruti (son of Marut or wind), Bajrangbali (hard as diamond and super powerful), etc. He is very dear to Mata Sita, Lord Ram, Lakshman, and Lord Shiva. In childhood itself, He was bestowed with the highest intellect, greatest powers and mightiest weapons by gods after He swallowed the sun, mistaking it to be a fruit. He is commonly portrayed with a mace, carrying the banner of Lord Ram. Another common depiction is that of Him carrying a mountain which alludes to an incident from the Ramayana. He is the manifestation of strength, wisdom and devotion combined.
Lord Hanuman is the embodiment of the Guru tattva (element). Therefore, sincere prayer to Him is the most effective means of obtaining guidance on the spiritual path, and in life in general. Hanuman Chalisa is the simplest and surest way of invoking him. It is a prayer consisting of forty couplets, written by Goswami Tulsidas, describing His attributes and asking for His blessings and protection. Individual couplets from it work like mantras on suitable occasions. Regular chanting of Hanuman Chalisa develops faculty of discrimination and intellect, boosts confidence, immunity and strength (He is a favorite deity among wrestlers), and drives away negative energy however powerful and in whatever form. Tuesday and Saturday are especially suitable for praying to Him.
When Lord Ram was wrapping up his leela and Hanuman wanted to leave with him, Ram enjoined Him to stay put so long as a single person chants his name. So, immortal by order of Lord Ram and by boon of Mata Sita, Hanuman ji is forever present to help true devotees out of troubles and to guide them.
