॥ अभिरामि स्तोत्रम् ॥

Abhirāmi Stotram

This hymn was created by Subramaniya Iyer, who became famous as Abhirami Battar (meaning the priest of Goddess Abhirami). Abhirami Devi is the presiding goddess of the Amritghateshwar Shiva temple in Thirukadayur, Tamil Nadu. This ancient temple is associated with many significant events. It is said that during the Samudra-Manthan, Lord Ganesha took some Amrit to worship the Shivlinga here. A different version of the story says that when the pot of Amrit churned out of the ocean, it established here by itself as Shivlinga, hence the name Amritghateshwar. It is here that Lord Shiva punished Yamraj to save his devotee Markandeya.

Before distributing the Amrit among the Devas, Lord Vishnu worshipped Shiva here. While performing the worship, Lord Vishnu took off his ornaments, and from these appeared Goddess Abhirami. Abhirami means she who is beautiful in every moment.

Subramaniya Iyer was a great devotee of the Mother, and was appointed head priest at the Amritghateshwar temple. Once, when he was drowned in devotional fervour, the King came to visit the temple. He asked Subramaniya what was the date of the moon that day. Subramaniya, focused entirely on the Mother, carelessly replied- full moon, when in fact it was new moon day. This attitude did not sit well with the King, so he decided to wait for the crescent moon to appear with nightfall and then sentence Subramaniya to death. When time came, and the King looked up at the sky, the merciful Divine Mother, full of love for her devotee, flung her earring to the sky, and it shone with such brightness that it looked like the full moon. The King realized Subramania’s greatness, and thence he became famously known as Abhirami Battar. It is known that, while waiting for moonrise, Abhirami Battar performed a particularly dangerous ritual, and created the Abhirami Anthadi in Tamil language, which contains 102 stanzas in praise of Devi Abhirami. This hymn in Sanskrit is also created by Abhirami Battar.

It is said with respect to this hymn that, a person who recites this hymn with devotion, and worships the Mother with Bimba fruit, deep (lamp), flowers, vermillion, etc. is blessed with age, strength, glory, virtues, and well-being, and the Mother takes residence in the devotee’s heart.
